Seeing Truth and Reality

We are the masters of our own destiny. Some people choose to lead a happy life while some lament on their fate; some spend their days in prosperity while some live in grumpiness.

The script of our present time was pre-written by us in the past. This means, we can rewrite the script for our future in the present moment. It is all going according to the natural Karmic Law of Cause and Effect.
Everyone’s life is a play in itself, and in this respect, what we are playing currently (the effect) is a result of the script written previously (the cause).

Whatever role one is playing, give it the best shot and after the play, whether there are applause/cheers or not, exit the stage gracefully and do not look back. This is a happy and carefree life indeed. Do not hold on when the play comes to a close or even when there is no assigned character.

Life is a like a drama and vice versa. Is it real on stage? Or is it real off stage? What can we take for certain?

Learning Buddhism would enable the wisdom to arise within us, hence we are able to see all things as they really are very clearly. Truth is all there is.

A friend in need is a friend indeed. The selfless-giving, derived when one becomes free from a self-centred personality, is pure and can be truly touching.

At the end of 2014, Malaysia saw the worst flooding in decades. Tzu Chi volunteers had helped clean some Malay schools and villages, where sensitivity needed to be managed carefully.

Nonetheless, they had carried out the clean-up, aid distributions, home visits and other relief efforts in the disaster areas out of the spirit of Great Love, underpinned by the great compassion for all.

From the initial suspicion and misconception, the Malays, including the religious teachers, gradually concurred and accepted Tzu Chi, and eventually mingled freely and felt grateful to the volunteers.

Had it not been for the major catastrophe, there will not be present a great affinity to turn the wheel of the Dharma, giving us the opportunity to offer genuine care in times of adversity.

Flattery or rhetoric should not be taken seriously as they could often be deceptive. It is like a person concentrating only on a jar of honey he is carrying as he moves hastily, and fails to notice a deep pit. Divisive speech, abusive language, sweet talk and idle chatter are vices of speech which are unwholesome verbal deeds.

In life, we are deluded in so many ways. For instance, some people love bitter gourd but some do not approve of it. The same applies to durians, which is regarded by some people as having a pleasantly sweet fragrance while some find the aroma overpowering and revolting.

Likewise with beauty that lies in the eye of the beholder. Some focus on physical appearance whilst some value inner beauty. When the chemistry is right and there is good affinity, one’s shortcoming will be seen as a plus point. On the other hand, when the personalities are incompatible and lack good affinity, one will be deemed full of faults.

This is a human weakness and blind spot. When we look outside the “self”, we compare and discriminate. We should look at the Dharma and not at other people.

Clouds are continually changing and appearing in an infinite variety of forms, such as human or animal form, sometimes a painting, and sometimes a mountain and sea. However, its substance – water vapour – remains the same. The various forms are just mental images, a delusion.

Therefore do not be deluded by what we perceive through the senses. Look at the process of perception, instead of looking at the object perceived. Apperceive rather than perceiving, that is, see how things come to be. This results in awakening from the dream of existence.

So, whether you are handsome or unattractive, plump or skinny, tall or petite, these are merely sensory experiences. All deluded beings are subject to death, which is the most unavoidable and unfavourable part of the dream. Thus, see the death in the light of truth.

See things clearly without delusion, without things being bent and distorted. Seeing that we are different or equal to others is not right. Just let all of that go and be free from all delusions!
In the language of the heart, of the Dharma, origination from nothing is an empty process, and because it is an empty causal process, it is also subject to cessation – to going back to an original source, that is, a zero sum (arising and vanishing, defiled and pure, rising and falling). Emptiness to begin with, emptiness in the end.
